We’re Hiring a Mechanic — Join the Team at Detroit Moped Works!
If you’re someone who enjoys working with your hands, has a love for two-wheeled machines (both vintage and modern), and thrives in a creative, community-driven shop atmosphere—we want to hear from you.
Detroit Moped Works is currently looking to hire a part-time or full-time mechanic to join our small but mighty crew. Whether you’re already wrenching full-time or just looking to turn your hobby into a career, this could be the perfect opportunity.
We’ve been around for over a decade, and our reputation for specializing in vintage mopeds is well-established. But as the times have changed, so has our workload. While we still love 1970s and ’80s mopeds, we now also service modern 49cc scooters, eBikes, and electric motorbikes from brands like Monday Motorbikes, Velotric, and Wolf Brand Scooters. That means every day at the shop is a little different—and we like it that way.
What We’re Looking For
This is a mechanic position, but we’re not expecting you to be a vintage moped encyclopedia on day one. What we do need is someone who:
- Shows up consistently
- Wants to learn
- Works well with their hands
- Can handle tools with confidence
- Is motivated by progress, not perfection
You should have experience working on at least one of the following:
- Vintage mopeds
- Small two-stroke motors
- Modern 49cc scooters
- Bicycles
- eBikes or electric motorbikes
Even better if you’re fluent in more than one of those categories. This job will flex a wide range of mechanical muscles—from simple tire swaps to complex electrical diagnostics and performance tuning.
Ideal Qualifications (But Not Dealbreakers)
We understand nobody checks every box, but here’s what would make you really stand out:
- You speak Spanish
- You’ve done some light welding or machining
- You know how to navigate vintage wiring harnesses and lithium battery tech
- You have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle that can haul 1–2 mopeds (for occasional local deliveries—maybe once or twice a month)
What It’s Like Working Here
Detroit Moped Works is not your average repair shop. We’re part of a movement, a community, and a culture. Our customers range from vintage collectors to daily commuters looking for reliable and affordable two-wheeled transportation. We host rides, sponsor events, and collaborate with other local businesses in Southwest Detroit and beyond.
As a mechanic here, you won’t be stuck doing oil changes all day. You’ll have your hands on rare builds, weird imports, and creative custom projects, plus the latest electric models that are shaping the future of local commuting.
The environment is relaxed but focused. Music’s always playing, shop dogs might stop by, and there’s usually a project or two rolling in that’s just as exciting as it is challenging.
We offer:
- Staff pricing on all products (at-cost)
- Occasional free lunch, always snacks and cold drinks
- Flexibility to grow your role based on your strengths
- A supportive team that values both professionalism and personality
- First dibs on custom builds or parts before they go online
Hours & Compensation
We’re open Monday through Saturday (closing early on Saturdays), and we’re looking for someone who can commit to a consistent and reliable schedule, whether that’s full-time or part-time.
Pay is based on experience and skill set, and while we’re a small independent business—not a corporate dealership—we do our best to take care of our people and help them grow.
How to Apply
If this sounds like your kind of job, we’d love to hear from you.
Please email the following to sales@detroitmopedworks.com:
- A full and proper résumé detailing your relevant work experience
- A short paragraph or two telling us why you think you’d be a good fit for this job and for Detroit Moped Works
You’re welcome to stop by the shop in person, but we will only consider applicants who submit a proper résumé.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, we’re a small business with a big personality. We’re passionate about what we do and who we do it for. If you think you’d fit in with a team that values hard work, creative problem-solving, and a little bit of weirdness—then this is your spot.
We’re excited to meet the next member of the Detroit Moped Works crew. Let’s build some bikes, keep Detroit riding, and have some fun along the way.
